Welcome to the Red Lion Quarter - a unique multi-use development in Spalding, Lincolnshire offering the following mix of business and leisure services:
Who was involved in the development of the Red Lion Quarter?
The project was managed by a partnership consisting of South Holland District Council, East Midlands Development Agency, Lincolnshire Enterprise, Boston College and Lincolnshire County Council. Together they secured funding and developed a sustainable centre of mixed business use.
Why was it built?
After years of consultations and market research, the partnership identified an urgent need for a number of facilities including a Further Educational College, the opportunity to showcase local food and speciality small food production, and the provision of small business units. It is hoped that such a substantial investment in the district will be wholeheartedly supported by businesses and the general public.
The creation of a satellite of Boston College in the district will enable many of the local population to benefit from a range of vocational training courses and the development of IT skills in a central part of the town.
The training restaurant 'SAGE ' (operated by the College) has received the backing of Jason Atherton, a Michelin star chef, who has already agreed to aid the promotion of the facility. It will also benefit students and apprentices by enabling them to train in a realistic commercial environment.
What is the history of the site?
The former buildings located in Red Lion Street had been derelict for more than ten years and had become a local eyesore. The District Council purchased the whole site which was identified as an ideal town centre location, close to the facilities of the water taxi, within close proximity to the market place and likely to encourage increased footfall into the area. This will obviously be of benefit to local businesses and services, and is also likely to improve the performance of many local retailers.
Who was involved in the construction?
This was a challenging but exciting journey and involved the combination of much hard work on behalf of all the partners, suppliers and contractors involved in the project, of which over 90% of the contracts were awarded to local businesses. The original project team comprised:
Willmott Dixon: main construction team
Thornton-Firkin: development employer’s agent
Fielden & Mawson: development architect
KGM (Lindum Group): roofing contractor
What future plans are there for the Red Lion Quarter?
South Holland is now home to the National Centre for Food Manufacturing, keeping abreast of the latest technology and moving with the times. The significance of the varied food production in the county and its impact on the country has become especially important during recent years due to the economic climate and the increased awareness of environmental issues such as food miles and food security.
Spalding continues to be a thriving Market Town with a bright future ahead of it. The Red Lion Quarter development will become a focal point in the area to celebrate Spalding’s long and varied history in relation to quality food and food production.
